Lani John Tupu provides the voice of Pilot, the mild-mannered creature symbiotically linked to Moya. For the past three seasons, Tupu also has portrayed Capt. Bialar Crais, a former Peacekeeper officer and sworn enemy of John Crichton. After a confrontation with Scorpius, Crais became an uncomfortable ally of the Moya crew. And in an uncharacteristic act of selflessness, Crais and Talyn sacrificed their own lives for the sake of their crewmates in the explosive season-three finale.

Tupu has spent considerable time in front of and behind the camera. As a director, he helmed the critically acclaimed and award-winning short film Talk of the Town, the video The Main Course, and also assistant directed the Karen Norris film Ole. As an actor, he starred in the TV movie Tanker Incident, the television series Flipper and has guest-starred on many television programs, both in his native New Zealand and in the United States, including Mission: Impossible, The Feds and Time Trax. His film credits include New World Pictures' The Punisher and Energy Source International's Send a Gorilla.

A founding member of the Walkers and Talkers theatre group in Australia, Tupu has extensive theatre credits; he has performed in more than 40 stage productions for several theatre companies in New Zealand. In 1993, he received an award for Best Dramatic Performance from the New Zealand Film Television Awards. He was nominated for the Best New Talent award at the 1984 Feltex Television Awards, and in 1985 was nominated for Best Actor. Tupu also was a finalist at the 1986 Listener Film Television Awards for Best Male Performance Supporting Role in Film, for Send a Gorilla. He received a Best Actor award for Talk of the Town at the Dreamaker Festival in Ontario, Canada.

Tupu was educated at Rongotal College in Wellington, New Zealand, and Wellington Teachers Training College. He was trained at the New Zealand Drama School.

Bialar Crais was in many ways an embodiment of contradictions. Born on a Sebacean farming colony, he and his brother, Tauvo, were forcibly conscripted at a young age by the Peacekeepers. Though initially taken against his will, Crais later became rigidly devoted to the Peacekeepers and their regulations — as long as they served his interests. When they didn't, he just as easily ignored the regulations and pursued his own, renegade path. Crais' first encounter with John Crichton was when the Human astronaut's Farscape Module collided with a Prowler piloted by Crais' brother, who was killed in the accident. Crais, unwilling to accept the incident for the accident it was, hunted Crichton and his shipmates aboard Moya until shortly after the birth of Talyn, a Leviathan-Peacekeeper hybrid Crais helped engineer. Realizing his own command was about to be usurped by Scorpius, Crais defected and took command of Talyn, with whom he escaped into the Uncharted Territories.
